French press is probably the most forgiving at-home brewing method. It requires no special paper filters, minimal equipment, and produces a full-bodied cup that many people find deeply satisfying — if you understand a few basics.

Here's what you need to know to get a good result.

How French Press Works

Coarsely ground coffee sits in hot water for about 4 minutes — a full-immersion brew, meaning the coffee and water are in contact the entire time. The plunger is then pressed down to separate the grounds, and the coffee is poured immediately.

Unlike pour over, there's no paper filter. This means all the coffee oils stay in the cup, giving French press its characteristic richness and body.

Grind Size Is Critical

Use a coarse grind — larger than you'd use for filter or espresso. Too fine, and the plunger won't filter properly; you'll end up with sediment and a murky cup. Coarse grind also means slower extraction, which is what you want for the 4-minute steep.

French Press vs Pour Over

These are the most common home brewing comparisons. French press gives you a heavier, oilier, more tea-like body — rich and comfortable. Pour over gives you a cleaner, more transparent cup where individual flavour notes are more visible.

Neither is superior. If you like a robust, full mug of coffee, French press is likely your method. If you want delicacy and clarity, pour over is worth exploring.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Leaving coffee in the French press after pressing is the most common mistake — the grounds continue extracting and the coffee becomes bitter. Press, pour immediately, and don't let it sit. A 4-minute steep is usually ideal; going much longer risks over-extraction.
