Turkish coffee and specialty filter coffee come from very different traditions. One is ancient, deeply embedded in Turkish culture, and made in a way that hasn't changed in centuries. The other is contemporary, methodical, and constantly evolving.

Büyükada is a place where both can sit comfortably at the same table.

Turkish Coffee in Brief

Turkish coffee is finely ground, unfiltered, and brewed slowly in a small copper or brass pot (cezve) with cold water over low heat. The grounds settle in the cup and are not consumed — you read the sediment if you like. The result is dense, heavy, often sweet (if prepared that way), and intensely aromatic.

Filter Coffee in Brief

Filter coffee — whether drip, pour over, or another method — separates grounds from the finished drink. The result is cleaner and lighter, with the coffee's finer character more visible: acidity, fruit notes, specific origin qualities. Specialty filter coffee is deliberately about highlighting those qualities.

How They Differ in the Cup

Turkish coffee is thick, heavy, and has a very distinct texture and finish. Filter coffee is clear, lighter, and more varied depending on the bean and method. Bitterness and body behave very differently between the two.

Neither is "better" — they're answers to different questions. Turkish coffee is often about ritual and comfort. Filter coffee is often about the bean's individual story.

On Büyükada

Turkish coffee is part of every café culture on the island. At Julius, the specialty filter and espresso-based menu represents the other tradition — equally valid, and genuinely complementary. Some guests have Turkish coffee ritually in the morning and pour over experimentally in the afternoon. Both make sense here.

Julius Büyükada

Whether you arrive knowing you want Turkish coffee or curious about specialty filter, the island makes space for both. Julius is the specialty side of that conversation.
